Abstract:

Interview begins with George Sandy's Indiana childhood and family, education, early interest in Socialism, and odd jobs and travel (hitchiking and catching trains) around the United States. The interview continues with his involvement in the Young Communist League as an organizer, and political involvement as a Communist Party member in New York in California. The end of the interview discusses his involvement in the senior movement in California and the organization of the politically active Congress of California Seniors.
Fifteen pages relating to Sandy's participation in the Communist Party include a 1950 W-2 pay withholding statement listing the Party as his employer, letters to and from Sandy, and copies printed matierals.

George Sandy was born in 1907 in Indiana, became an organizer for the Young Communist League in Southern California in the 1930's, went to New York as an organizer for the League in the 1940's, returned to California and worked with the Communist Party for most of his career until 1968, and ran for Congress in California and New York as a communist. Sandy later became active in the senior movement and was president of the Congress of California Seniors.
